The Upside of Downsizing!

There is so much talk in the real estate industry these days about millennials, first-time buyers, social media, online marketing, virtual tours, etc. that sometimes Bob and I feel not enough information is out there for a different demographic – those looking to downsize.

Downsizing can come in a variety of forms for a variety of reasons. Oftentimes it happens when it has to – health reasons, a spouse’s death, inability to take care of a large home, financial concerns, etc.

But we like to think of downsizing as more of a philosophy – simplifying life to free up time and mental energy to focus on the things that matter most: your health, your family, your community, your hobbies and volunteer roles.

Ideally downsizing would happen before it really needs to happen… when you can do it on your own terms, taking the time to consult with your family and carefully select the next place you want to live in and the items you want to take with you.

We have developed a presentation detailing several options available when considering downsizing:

  1. Staying in your home but reducing the amount of work it takes to own it
  2. Moving into a smaller single-family home and setting it up to be the leastmaintenance possible
  3. Moving into a townhome or villa that has the feel of a house but less work
  4. Moving into an apartment that reduces that amount of maintenance as much aspossible
  5. Alternative ideas such as mobile homes, co-ownership, laneway suites, etc.

We can provide the full PDF version to you if you or a parent/grandparent may be in the right phase of life to be thinking about their next steps and wants to read the information on their own.

Alternatively, if you have a connection with any kind of senior’s group through your community, social activities or churches, we would love the opportunity to come and present our information  to a small group.

We include a sample comparison of monthly budgets for all of the options and the pros and cons to consider. The presentation can be completed in under an hour and we will bring coffee 🙂

If you want an individual, no-pressure discussion, we are also happy to talk on the phone or meet in person. There are so many great options in this city that aren’t shoebox-sized apartments with noisy neighbours!

Bob and I understand that this can be a challenging move to make in life and are committed to the patience and understanding it takes to help you or a family member transition. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at any time for more information.

Amie Hautz

Hi, I’m Amie – it sounds like Miami, not Amy, but I won’t give you a hard time if you don’t remember how to say it ;)

I’ve been a full-time realtor since 2006 and am proud to have achieved the top 1% of realtors across Canada, but you won’t find my face on billboards or bus benches across the city. I pride myself on professionalism, expertise and strong communication but my focus is on YOU – achieving your real estate and lifestyle goals.

I have mainly lived in the inner city but have worked extensively through all parts of Calgary and the surrounding communities. I love the unique relationship I foster with all of my clients, from fresh-faced first-time buyers to downsizers making a move on their own terms.

A few fun facts… When I’m not working, you can often find me downhill mountain biking or skiing with my husband and friends. My greatest weakness is Made by Marcus ice cream. My favourite place is in a forest – the bigger the trees, the better. Other Calgary faves include an americano misto from Monogram, sourdough bread from Begonia Bakehouse, happy hour at Bridgette Bar, the view of downtown from Crescent Heights and taking a cold water swim in the Bow River!
